The Publishers and Booksellers Guild announced on Tuesday that twenty-five famous Spanish writers would be present at the 46th International Kolkata Book Fair, where Spain will be the theme country.

The fair will take place from January 31 to February 12 in the Central Park Mela Ground in Salt Lake, near Kolkata, which has been renamed Boimela Prangan.

Eva Baltasar, David Trueba, Agustin Fernandez Mayo, Luis Garcia Montero, Jordi Gracia, Jesus Aguado, and Anna Caballe are among the writers.

The film "La Novia" (The Bride), based on Federico Garcia Lorca's piece "Bodas de Sangre" (Blood Wedding), will also be presented by Spanish director Paula Ortiz.

The International Kolkata Book Fair's official program includes conversations and round tables between Spanish and Indian writers, as well as publishers from both nations.

Rare 'punthis' (ancient manuscripts) from Bengal will be shown in a pavilion for the first time in partnership with the Asiatic Society, according to a statement from the Guild.

The theme country- Spain Day will be observed on January 31, and Children's Day will be observed on February 5.

There will be separate pavilions for each international publishing industry player, such as Penguin Random House India, Harper Collins, Pan Macmillan, Rupa, Bloomsbury, and others, in addition to regular direct participation from countries such as the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Bangladesh, Japan, France, Italy, Australia, Cuba, and other Latin American countries.

Thailand will attend the International Kolkata Book Fair for the first time.

The biennial book expo will include publishers from Kerala, Gujarat, Odisha, Tripura, Bihar, Tamil Nadu Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Assam, Tripura, and other states.

The International Kolkata Book Fair gathered 2.2 million book aficionados and set records in prior years by selling books worth Rs 23 crore in 2022, following a one-year gap due to Covid-19, according to a release.

The 9th edition of the Kolkata Literature Festival 2023, an important feature of the Book Fair, will take place over three days, from February 9 to 11, in the fairground auditorium.
